Discover Coimbra, home to Portugal’s first university and one of the country’s cultural gems. On this private tour, you’ll explore its most iconic landmarks, diving into history, academic traditions, and the unique charm of this enchanting city.
We depart from Porto and begin our guided tour at the impressive New Cathedral, before entering the historic buildings of Coimbra University, including the magnificent Royal Palace, the stunning Joanina Library, and the charming Chapel of São Miguel. Along the way, I’ll share fascinating stories about student traditions that continue to shape Coimbra’s identity.
We then descend to the downtown (Baixa), wandering through its picturesque streets and visiting the iconic Old Cathedral (Sé Velha), a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Afterward, we take a break for a traditional lunch.
In the afternoon, we visit the historic Church of Santa Cruz, the final resting place of Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques. Next, we cross the Mondego River to explore the Monastery of Santa Clara and the romantic Quinta das Lágrimas Garden, the setting of Portugal’s most famous tragic love story, that of Pedro and Inês.
On our way back to Porto, we make a brief stop in Santa Maria da Feira, where you can catch a glimpse of its medieval castle.
